--------------------------------------------------

In Kyoto the leaves are now full of color.

It's been a quick six months since our last update. We should tell everyone what we've been up to.

First, we had our performance at the Zuisenkyo for their tea party:

Just a short ride north of Kokusai-kaikan and you find yourself in a beautiful place like this.

The tea ceremony was held next to their organic vegetable garden.

We also made some bamboo helicopters.

And they actually flew!

And our concert...Here's Yujiro checking his fly!

The perfect weather had everyone feeling good.

And we felt great too!

Everyone enjoying the sunshine.

Big thanks to the Zuisenkyo and to the residents there.

--------------------

Next, we played at an art gallery.

It was the first night of the exhibition, and the air was filled with excitement.

Everyone listened so attentively.

But we were all waiting for the wine to start flowing!

Cheers!

Thanks and best wishes to Yamazaki Ryo. His works of sculpture calm the heart.

----------------------

Next is our performance at a Zen temple.

The renowned garden of Entokuin.

The drumming drew in more and more curious people.

A good time was had by all.

Performing at a place like this has a special feeling.

Lots of folks came to see us, including Yujiro's teacher who first showed him how to play the guitar 24 years ago!

What a special oppurtunity it was to play at a place like this--it makes it all worthwhile.

Thanks to everyone for coming out to see us.

Our music will continue on...

----------------

And for our special news, here's our newest member!

We're now a trio!

He (she?) is our new tip jar!

Toss him a little change if you appreciate our music.

Thanks for reading and we look forward to seeing everyone soon,

The bog-bean flowers at Midorogaike:

Also, the Rhododendron are in full bloom at Takaragaike now, making for a dream-like environment for a morning walk.

Hi everyone!

The warm weather this month is such a big change from the snowfall we had last month. Everything is starting to bloom.

Places that I normally walk by without much of a thought are now tinged with the sweet fragrance of plum blossoms. The wonderful smell of spring is in the air!

Our duo has finally gotten out from under the kotatsu, and we're preparing to give bloom to the flower of music.

This year we've been invited again to perform outdoors under the cherry blossoms at the tea party of the Iwakura Zuisenkyo.

Here is a flier for the event (Japanese):
[WORD: 932KB]
[PDF: 1.3MB]

The place is a farm surrounded by wonderful natural scenery. There will be many events, including a hands-on gardening demonstration and nature games. We hope to see you there.

We will perform at 1 pm.

We're still giving our usual casual concerts each month at Nifty too.

Come on out with your favorite book for a relaxing evening. Or just listen and let your thoughts flow freely.

Thanks for reading.

ManekiNeko―Performance Updates for Feb. 2008

Place: Nifty (Takaragaike)

--------------------------------------------------

Hi everyone!

We've had quite a bit of snow this winter and here up north near Takaragaike, it is a world of white.

Snow absorbs sound, and there is a strangely unusual silence on the morning after a snowfall. It is exhilarating to be greeted with a snowy scene when one takes a look outside in the morning.

The areas outside shops sometimes have a bit of ice, and you can see lots of folks diligently chipping away at it with snow shovels and the like.

Our guitar teacher, who is from Hokkaido, always gets a kick out of seeing people do this.

That's because he knows that in areas like this where the temperature doesn't dip below freezing that often, you can easily clear a walkway simply by spraying water on it.

That must be why I saw a shop owner here from the north painlessly clear the area in front of his shop by doing that.

It's funny what a bit of knowledge and experience can do.

Come on out to Nifty with your favorite book and enjoy a warm evening by the fireplace.

Thanks for reading.

ManekiNeko--New Year Performance Updates (Jan. 2008)

--------------------------------------------------
Live Performance at Nifty
Date/time: Tuesday, January 29, 2008, 8 pm
Place: Nifty (Takaragaike)
*There is no charge for this event.
--------------------------------------------------

Hi everyone from ManekiNeko!

Over the last year, our fun monthly free concerts at our homeground, Nifty, led to many more opportunities for performing.

We played at a tea ceremony under the cherry blossoms, at a lovely reception party for a wedding, at the Kyoto Greco-Roman Museum, at a machiya for our wine and cheese (read: drunken!) concert, and at a dinner party for an interesting company gathering.

Thanks to everyone, we were blessed with the opportunity to have many great performances.

Our sincerest thanks go out to all of you!

*   *   *

It was during the fall three years ago when we started our duo with the philosophy of giving enjoyable concerts, even if that meant playing for free or paying money to perform. Not striving for some ideal, we decided to start from the level we were at, acting on the basis that the actions we put out into the world would define who we would be in the future.

And now we are so excited every time we get the chance to play and see everyone again. Thanks for the soul food, the actual food (!), and also the funds to help us buy food (Actually, we've been putting those funds back to buy a new instrument!).

We are grateful for what we have received from you all.

*   *   *

When we change the channel on our TV, we are immediately able to pick up the signal that comes in. In the same way, by continuing to give enjoyable concerts, we have been able to see many more smiling faces than we ever have before. This year we hope to share our joy with many more. Let's enjoy this year of the rat together--it is, after all, the reset of the twelve-year cycle!

Thanks for reading!

ManekiNeko--End of the Year Nifty Performance, December,2007

--------------------------------------------------
Date/time: Thursday, December 20, 2007, 8pm
Place: Nifty cafe
(There is no charge)
--------------------------------------------------

Hi everyone from the ManekiNeko guitar duo.

The book "The Secret," which has sold 8,600,000 copies worldwide, has now made its way to Japan.

The Secret

The book explains the "Law of Attraction," a law that governs the universe.

It explains that what is occuring within oneself, whether it be good or bad, is the result of what one has thought and said up to this point.

After understanding the "Law of Attraction" and envisioning the future you want, you can create that future for yourself--this is premise of the book that makes it so practical.

The book has many useful ideas that I have been enjoying applying to my own life:

"I will be surrounded by that which I put out into the world"

Applying this law, ManekiNeko will continue to aim at giving performances that lighten our listeners' hearts.

We hope to see many of you at our next performance, and bring your copy of "The Secret" if you have one!

Thanks for reading!

ManekiNeko--Late Fall Performance Updates (Nov. 2007)

--------------------------------------------------
Live Performance at Nifty
Date/time: Wednesday, November 28, 2007, 8 pm
Place: Nifty (Takaragaike)
*There is no charge for this event.
--------------------------------------------------

Hi everyone from ManekiNeko. Hope this finds you well.

Our last performance, "Autumnal Fermata," was a great
success! The machiya was filled with lovers of live music
and wine. A big thanks to all of you who came and to
everyone who helped make it possible.

The old kitchen space in the machiya has a lofty ceiling
that made for a full sound from the guitars.

Our performance this time was held in conjunction with a
photo exhibition by Kato Wako-san, who photographs and
writes about Kyoto in her blog "Sando-gasa Shokan." She
gave an interesting talk about some of the intriguing
stories behind her pictures.

Wako-san, thanks for your inspiring work!

The machiya had some other manekinekos present this
time--a couple of stray cats that the owners are taking
care of. They were constantly peeking out through the
crack in the door, keeping the kids entertained.

On the day of the concert, while moving furniture to set
up for the performance, Yujiro managed to smash his big
toe. It looks like it will take another month to heal!

Wako-san acted quickly and applied a peculiar cream
concocted from leaves of the biwa (loquat) tree, and that
seemed to help stave off infection.

In spite of the injury, we were able to carry on thanks to
our loyal crew. Kaori:

Here she is struggling to slash through the enormous
blocks of cheese we bought.

Also, thanks to the steadfast support of Shukichi and
Sasaki, the concert was successful and turned out to be a
lot of fun, despite Yujiro's fat toe. Thanks to our crew
for their help!

Since our concerts last year and this year have been a
success, we are planning on doing something even better
next year. Stay tuned!

This month we will have our usual "stealthy" performance
at Nifty, so please do stop by if you have a chance.

--------------------------------------------------

Hi everyone from ManekiNeko!

It's fall now, and you can feel the weather slowly turning cooler.

Fall is a great time for enjoying the leaves, reading, playing sports, enjoying the arts, and --- more than anything else --- enjoying food more than one can in the hot months.

We have been enjoying the arts and the other beautiful things that we encounter in our everyday lives.

We are delighted to announce that we will be holding aert at the same machiya we did last year, thanks to
the help of the folks at the Nisijin Machiya Studio!

We'd love for you all to come out and enjoy the sound of the classical guitar in the relaxed atmosphere of the machiya.

Our concert this time will be held in conjunction with an exhibition by our friend and photographer, Kato Wako. She will be exhibiting photos of Kyoto and its environs, mostly taken from her blog. Look forward to her commentary
on her photos, which she will give on the evening of our concert.

Here's the link for her exhibition, which is entitled
"Tidepool"

Like a tidepool, Kyoto is a collection of whirling sounds, scenes, and words.

Since so many asked as for wine last year, we have decided to serve some this year!

Enjoy some music while having a glass of Bordeaux wine and some cheese (leave some for us too!)

The first 30 people to reserve a seat will be given two extra wine and cheese tickets! That's a total of three cups, so it's a pretty good deal.

If you can't hold all that alcohol, feel free to give away or resell your tickets!

We'll try to have enough for anyone who wants second helpings, even if you don't have a reservation. We'll have soft drinks too.

For reservations, contact us at the following link:
email: info@manekineko.in
fax: 075-702-1952

We're looking forward to spending a relaxing evening with you all.

If you can't make the machiya event, do come see us at Nifty.

The ManekiNeko Guitar Duo Performance Schedule Updates for September 200

Nifty Concert
Time: Friday, September 28, 2007 at 8pm
Place: Nifty (Takaragaike)
Admission is free

Hi everyone, it's been pretty hot, hasn't it?

I got an email from a friend in Hokkaido the other day,
and he said it was still over 30 degrees there!

As it's now higan, it should start cooling off this week.

The cooler weather should make Nifty a nice place to have
a slow meal and do some reading.

Come out and see us if you have some time!

This year, we are planning on having our second concert at
the Nishijin Machiya Studio.

We'll write up the details for that concert sometime soon.
This year we have some goodies for everyone who reserves a
seat!

We look forward to seeing you!

The ManekiNeko Guitar Duo Performance Schedule Updates for July 2007

Nifty Concert
Friday, July 27, 2007
Time: 8 pm
Place: Nifty (Takaragaike)
(There is no charge for this performance)

Hi everyone!

The long rainy season has passed, leaving us with the
clear blue skies of summer.

We would like to offer our condolences to those who
sustained damages or injury due to the recent typhoon and
the Niigata earthquake.

Yujiro also came down with a cold, so apologies for this
announcement being so late. (He's recovering now, like the
better weather we've had recently)

Last month, our duo was blessed with many new
opportunities.

We played at the reception at a friend's wedding ceremony.
It was nice to be able to share such an important time
with them.

Thanks to the newly weds for reminding us that
contributing to another's happiness is the best way to
make oneself happy.

*   *   *

We also had our "Cantabile in June" concert.

Adam's piece "Kyle's Landing" received great acclaim! He's
currently working on some new compositions for our
concerts this fall.

Yujiro got nervous, and his face showed off his
spectacular "Niagara Falls of Sweat" technique!

The doors behind us were opened during our encore, and the
green of the garden formed a nice harmony with our
playing.

Kato Wako, who is involved in the IT business, also did a
nice write up in her blog about our concert. Please check
it out:

加藤わこ三度笠書簡
深緑賛歌──六月のカンタービレ・招き猫演奏会の午後

We are truly grateful to all of you who helped fill the
seats at our last concert, despite the fact that our duo
still has little experience or ability to reach more
listeners.

Thanks!

Tuesday, June 26, 2007

Place: Nifty (Takaraga-ike)

Good morning from the ManekiNeko duo!

The fresh green of the trees and plants is beautiful this
time of year, isn't it!

This month we have our first chance to play a concert for
which we will receive payment.

There is a part of me that thinks it may be too early for
us, but, as they say, "opportunities make a person grow,"
and circumstances have helped bring us to this point.

* * *

There are many different types of handwriting:

Elegant, refined, energetic, round and playful...

Among those, some handwriting can have the power to touch
people's hearts--even though it may be rough, it has a
heartfelt sense to it. The most important things don't
always depend on skill alone.

When I was a fourth grade student in elementary school, I
wrote a letter to a girl I liked.

Our teacher had given us an exercise to write a letter to
a fellow classmate. I was excited at the prospect and
ended up writing a bulky letter that could barely fit into
the envelope.

The words that I wrote then probably seemed like the best
in the world to me.

Our concert on June 10th is the first time we will receive
payment.

We're busy practicing away, but we still have lots more
polishing to do.

However, this concert--like that first letter I wrote to
my classmate--is a special occasion for us.

Come out to enjoy it with us!
